CHAPTER FIFTEEN

When Thomas arrived back at the battle zone, he found things had deteriorated greatly in his short absence. Mish and Raven were the only ones still on their feet, and from the looks of them only just. Dead elves and shadowhounds littered the ground; Pierce and Miranda were crouched protectively around Peter and they were both bleeding from cuts inflicted by the wraiths, which the air was fairly black with.

Thomas didn’t know what he could do but die here. Without the drugs his mental ability wasn’t good for anything but broadcasting, at least so far as he knew, and he doubted that would help much in this situation. This was stupid. It was pointless to die this way.

Miranda raised her head and their eyes met. Thomas saw again that look she had given him when he saved her from Everclear. It wasn’t the way she looked at Charlie, but it was something. Nobody had ever looked at him that way before. Nobody had ever made him want to try even when things felt hopeless. A look like that might be worth dying for.

He closed his eyes and tried to focus on finding some will within the wraiths that he could work against. Back at the castle, he had forced Duncan to drop his gun when he was threatening Miranda and he had been half dead then. Of course, he’d also still had some of the drugs in his system. Now he was stronger, but without the boost the drugs could give. Still, he would try. For her.

At first there was nothing in the darkness. Not even the faintest spark of life. Suggesting to him that either these creatures had no will, or he simply could not reach them. Then his mind brushed up against something so inhuman that it recoiled from the contact. He forced the connection anyway; desperate to do something. Anything.

The darkness came alive with a malevolent presence that writhed and snarled under his probing. Some of its thoughts spilled across him, telling him that this creature, this dark one, could not pass through the magestone created tunnel. It was sending lesser creatures through to attack the others while it tried to get the disk from Charlie.

Yes, the disk, the thought slithered across Thomas’ mind with a dry rustle. Test not your strength against mine. Give me the disk and be set free. Resist me and die.

Thomas smiled into the dark; knowing that even if he handed over the disk, this thing would never let them leave. Sorry, no can do.

The dark one roared out its fury. Then it attacked, slamming its will against Thomas’ and trying to drive him out. It was strong. So strong. But Thomas held on, seeking a way to force it to release its hold over the wraiths. He dug himself deeper into the dark one’s mind. Mental claws raked across his consciousness, filling him with a red hot pain the likes of which he’d never before felt. Still, he clung stubbornly
